I am signing copies of my book and giving away prizes TONIGHT @ NEDSW Ball in Arlington MA @ 8pm!

I will be selling and signing copies of my ebook on CD, Blood of the Dark Moon, the first in the Dark Moon series and reviewed with great praise by pagan and occult book fiction and non-fiction reviewer Mike Gleason. If you enjoy tales of secret societies, vampires, paganism, mythology, vampire erotica, supernatural romance, urban fantasy and dark fantasy in general, the book is definitely up your alley.

Free reads of my book can be found here: http://www.adriannebrennan.com/excerpts.html
Reviews of my book, including Mike Gleason's, can be found here: http://www.adriannebrennan.com/reviews.html

Please note: last week my book has gone out of print, leaving the limited quantities of the book that I have on CD as the ONLY copies left available to purchase at this time. If you want to read this book and don't want to wait until it goes back into print, I would suggest either attending this event, purchasing a copy on my website, or contacting me to arrange for a sale.

Here are the details for those of you in the New England area or will be in the area around then:

7th Annual Darkside Walkers Ball
When: 2/23/08 8pm-12am

Where: 370 Mass Ave, Arlington, MA 02474 (Arlington American Legion)

Who: Featuring various vendors and DJ Vudu, DJ Krztov, DJ Pet, DJ xTIMMYxCOREx, and a performance by Seppuku.

There will also be an after hours party from 12am til whenever for ball attendees. Location will be announced at ball.

$10.00 cover 21+

I'll be there for the duration of the event at my own table. Please stop by and get your own copy of my ebook on CD! I'll even autograph it for you if you like. :) I also plan to have other goodies both as freebies and for sale, plus the chance to win prizes!

Local artists and craftsmen have donated in the past, and have for this event, jewelry and other handmade gifts for prizes. It supports their services and gives people a chance to win goodies if they buy my book! I have had a few donations from some very talented people from the New England and as far away as central NY, and so far include a beautiful framed photograph of a cobra and a black and red ribbon choker.

Calling all local artists! Still accepting items for promo.

I'm going to be vending a table for book sales/signings for Blood of the Dark Moon at the 7th Annual New England Darksidewalkers Ball, and typically what I do is give away prizes during such events. Anyone who buys a CD can have their name entered into a drawing. I like to give out more than one prize, and I like it to be local artists and craftsmen.

People who provide anything in the way of prizes in the form of their crafts can give me flyers, business cards, or whatever for their store. That way people who stop by know who donated them, and it supports people who do any form of crafts, whether it be jewelry, clothing, handbags, bookmarks, metalwork, woodcarving, et cetera.

If you are not local to Boston but are willing to ship your item(s) and/or business cards, that's fine too--I've had one person who has done that already.

Email me at adrianne (at) adriannebrennan (dot) com if you're interested, and we can work out something. I have a few donations already from locals but would gladly accept more. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested.

Update on Blood of the Dark Moon

I have a limited number of out-of-print copies of Blood of the Dark Moon on CD--but enough to put the offer up on my site for people who want them and don't want to wait until another publisher takes my book.

They still have the cover on them from Aphrodite's Apples--which is a gorgeous cover, btw--and every book I sell, I will autograph. If you have any requests in that regard (for gifts to friends, family, et cetera), then just let me know when you place the order.

It's $14.10 for each CD (including s/h and Paypal fees) and you can buy one here:

http://www.adriannebrennan.com/botdm.html

I'm expecting a shipment in for the book sale/signing next Saturday, Feb 23rd. If you are local, you will save money by buying them from me in person at that sale. Otherwise, you can arrange to meet me at some point and buy a copy. Just email me at adrianne (at) adriannebrennan (dot) com.

Offer lasts while supplies last.

Aphrodite's Apples is closing effective today.

Aphrodite's Apples, my publisher, is closing effective today.

What does this mean for me and my book? Here's a quick FAQ.

Q: Is there a way we can still buy your book?
A: Yes, there is. Fortunately unlike many, I bought a bunch of advance copies on CD directly from my publisher to resell at booksignings and events. Once Aphrodite's Apples closes, I will be selling them on my website for the price that they were on the website plus shipping, handling, and Paypal fees. They will be for sale while supplies last.

Q: Will you still be at the booksigning?
A: Yes, of course. Nothing changes that; I still have everything I need in order to be there--otherwise I wouldn't even be able to sell the books on my site.

Q: Can't you just put out your book yourself?
A: No, because I have no desire to be self-published.

Q: How about starting up your own company?
A: No. I want to be a writer, not a publisher.

Q: What publishing companies are you looking into?
A: There are a few that I've narrowed it down to, but unfortunately a few of them require that I have an original published work with them before I can take a reprint to them to be republished. It depends on what company I feel is best to represent my book and whether or not I have a chance at it going into print.

Q: When you get republished, will it be in print as well as ebook?
A: Depends on the publisher that takes it. Ideally, yes--even if down the road at some point depending on sales.

Q: What other writing projects do you have going on? What about that short story that was going into an AA anthology? Will you be submitting those elsewhere as well?
A: The short story will be expanded into a novella and sent off to another publisher. I also have another series in the works, the sequel to Blood of the Dark Moon in the works, plus other short stories that will be taking place in either universe of the series.

Like I said before to others, I'm trying to look at this as an opportunity, not a setback. It's more than likely I can get my book off to a really well grounded publishing company that could take it places. It's just what happens to it in the meantime and how long that will take that is the setback.

"Don't like our weather? Wait five minutes."

I live in eastern Massachusetts, and I think the subject line is a common phrase around here.

I never even knew of the term "thundersnow" or that it even existed until I moved to the area. When I first saw it in the forecast one afternoon in downtown Boston, I had a fifteen minute giggle fit. My co-worker thought it was just as funny--then the snow came pouring down and oh, the lightning!!

Anyone have any weird weather tales? I can't be the only one who deals with this shit or thinks it's funny.

Want a chance at winning my book, Blood of the Dark Moon?

Tuesday, February 05, 2008

Come chat with me tomorrow and the rest of the Midnight Seductions Authors at Rites of Romance!

Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

For those of you who do not know, Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and takes place the day before Ash Wednesday. I believe most people think of beads, parades, and alcohol when they think of Mardi Gras. Me personally, I think of New Orleans.

The first and last Mardi Gras in New Orleans I ever went to was the last one before Katrina hit. I am extremely disappointed that I haven't been able to visit New Orleans since. Aside from Boston, NYC's West Village, and Seattle it is one of the few cities I've been to that instantly felt like "home." I spent my dreams wandering down the streets of the French Quarter (AKA the Vieux Carré), remembering the sights and sounds of the shops and jazz clubs, the taste of beignets with cafe au lait, shrimp creole, and clove cigarettes.

I also remember someone pointing the levees out to my friends and me, saying that "If a Category 4 storm hit...." Oh, the sadness once those words became prophetic later on that year. I gave financially to the Red Cross a number of times since then on behalf of Katrina's victims--ALL of them, not just in New Orleans. A friend of mine in Mississippi discovered the joys of having his own life ripped away from him during that storm as well. Many people wondered how people would be able to move on, let alone be able to have Mardi Gras parades ever again.

Hence why I found it so uplifting to discover that the parades were still held the following year and the subsequent years to come. Mardi Gras is for celebration--and not just flashing your tits for beads. :D Although, I confess I did my share of that during my stay for the sake of "tradition". I also have precious little in the way of modesty!

Here's a fun link on Mardi Gras in New Orleans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans_Mardi_Gras. At some point I plan to revisit the city, especially since so much of the city's money comes from tourism. And gods, do I love New Orleans!

If people know of good, reputable websites and organizations to help rebuild New Orleans and help the people who are still being affected by Katrina, please send them my way and I'll edit this post to include them.

Edit: here's a link for my vegan jambalaya recipe, made easy: http://adriannebrennan.livejournal.com/72744.html

"Oh, I'm a published author!"

There are certain moments when it really hits me: wow, I'm a published author! This has been my dream for the past two decades of my life, and it's great to finally see it fulfilled. A bit surreal, even.

One of those moments hit today when I received my first royalty check in the mail. Omgs. It never matters how much or how little that damned check is--never let anyone fool you on that one--but the fact that you got one at all along with that nifty official-looking statement.

Omgs.

Getting copies of my ebook on CD was equally thrilling. I think I danced around my living room with the silly thing while my cats looked upon me in confusion. "Mrr? Mrrrr?"

Then there was the moment my book first went up on the website. Wow. Just...wow. RELEASE DAY!! Release days are ALWAYS awesome and I look forward to my next one! (April-ish looks to be the target, more later when I have it)

Also, my first CD sale. That made me seriously squee. And on a side note, I'm glad that I made the book signing party into just that--a party. I didn't want anything formal, or to make speeches, or crap like that--just have lots of food, conversation, and good times. Just like a party. And it's my book party, so I can if I want to...nyah, nyah, nyaaahhhh. LOL

All of these little moments add up, I think. And I'm damned thankful to come this far. It just shows that if you don't give up on your dreams, you can make them happen. THAT'S real magic.

:)

Blue roses!

Blue roses to go on sale in Japan

TOKYO (AFP) - Think that red roses are predictable? In Japan, gift-givers soon will also have the option of blue roses.

The Japanese company that created the world's first genetically modified blue roses said Monday it will start selling them next year.

Suntory Ltd., also a major whisky distiller, hopes to sell several hundred thousand blue roses a year, company spokesman Kazumasa Nishizaki said.

"As its price may be a bit high, we are targeting demand for luxurious cut flowers, such as for gifts," he said. The exact price and commercial name for the blue rose have not been decided.

The company is also growing the rose experimentally in Australia and the United States to get approval for sales, but no timing has been set for commercial launches in the two countries.

Suntory in 2004 unveiled the world's first genetically modified blue rose after 14 years of study which also involved Australian researchers.

It created the flowers by implanting the gene that leads to the synthesis of the blue pigment Delphinidin in pansies. The pigment does not exist naturally in roses.

Happy Imbolc!

For those of my readers who celebrate the holiday, Happy Imbolc!

Regardless of whether or not you do... what plans do you have for the upcoming spring? Vacation time, projects, writings...?

I have a short story that you'll hear more about in the upcoming months--probably around March or April. And yes, it's set in the Dark Moon series with some of the characters. :) I also have a ton of writing projects underway, and then there's the nonstop project that is my house.

Happy Friday! :D

The question got asked this week on one of my emailing lists: how much time per day do you spend on the computer? The second question was, how much would you prefer to be spending?

My response was succinct: "Too much." "Much less."

When you are both a writer and a computer programmer, you spend WAY too much time on the computer. At an 8-4 job, you're there for at least 8 hours. Then there's the time you spend at home on the computer, which is another 1-6 hours right there depending on what else you have going on that evening. That's 8-14 hours PER DAY!

The question then becomes, where do you have outlets for escaping the computer? Or are your outlets ON your computer? Me, I work out on my eliptical when I can, go out to socialize, and on rarer occasions, watch a movie with my kitties. My time on the computer is best served, when possible, either writing, chatting, or playing World of Warcraft.

Tonight I have friends coming over for a potluck/tv series night. I plan to be on the computer as little as possible.

Enjoy your Friday night!
